Winter is awesome but can be harsh on your skin. We have 4 simple tips for keeping your skin moist, healthy and radiant.

You can feel it the second you walk outside; the winter temperature drops. You can also feel it staying inside, the blast of the dry warm heat. It is the yearly battle of keeping your skin from getting dried out.

Your skin has a tough job to do all year round but, in the winter, it struggles even more. Most dermatologists will say it very simply when it comes to your skin, “keep the inside world in and the outside world out”. No to get too scientific but your lipid barrier, the outermost layer of the skin made up of fatty compounds, helps keep hydration, germs, and toxins out. When the air gets drier, moisture is pulled from that layer which impairs skin cell turnover and leads to dry and flaky skin.

Here are four tips from skin experts that may help reduce the chances of getting dry skin.

Skip the Hot Shower.

OK, it is cold. The walk from the bed to the coffee maker to the shower can seem like a trek in the North Pole. A long hot shower is not the best thing for your skin. Hot showers strip oil from your skin. Most experts suggest switching to a shorter, cooler shower and using fragrance soap. Your shower temperature should what you would imagine a heated pool would feel like in the summer.

2. Moisturize More.

OK, you have adjusted to the “warm” shower. Now apply moisturizer. The best time is when your skin is still damp. Mat your skin dry and generously apply. When you think about which moisturizer to use think of one word, BORING. The blander the better. Avoid fragrances and preservatives such as parabens since they can irritate already dry skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends products with these ingredients: jojoba, dimethicone, glycerin, lanolin, petroleum and shea butter.

3. Humidify.

Changing from a dehumidifier to a humidifier is a good idea and not only at home but in your workplace also. Humidifiers can help recirculate moisture. Make sure you are cleaning it regularly and changing the water daily. This will help prevent bacteria.

4. Be Patient.

If you are currently experiencing dry or cracked skin, you may have already broken the skin barrier. It can take weeks or months for that to heal. It takes, on average, three to four weeks for the skin barrier to fully repair so start early in the season.

Quite simply exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outermost layer of our skin. There are two types of exfoliants: physical and chemical.

Physical Exfoliants also known as mechanical exfoliants are very common. They are granular substances which act as micro scrubs to physically buff the skins surface to remove dead skin cell buildup. These are commonly found in the form of brushes, sponges, scrubs, and soaps. Physical exfoliation produces a glow that you can feel immediately due to the immediate increase of blood flow to the worked area.

Chemical Exfoliants use enzymes or acid-based solutions that dissolve the protein bonds between dead skin cells enabling easy removal. These include AHA’s, BHA’s that naturally help slough off dead skin cells. Quite simply chemical exfoliants do the work for you, you simply apply.

Before you make exfoliating part of your skincare routine, determine what process will work well for your skin type. Individuals with sensitive skin are encouraged to use a chemical exfoliant since these can be formulated to be gentler than using the physical form. Starting with an aggressive physical exfoliant can cause skin irritation and redness. While exfoliating is great for removing dead and damaged skin cells, refrain from exfoliating over cuts, open wounds, and sunburn. After exfoliating it is recommended to apply a moisturizer as it will lock the moisture in and keep the skin both hydrated and rejuvenated. Hydration is also very important; be sure you are consuming an adequate amount of H2O.

Blustering winds, cold temps and lack of sunshine is no reason to not have beautiful skin this winter and the best ingredients are right in your kitchen.

Wintertime is usually a harsh time for the skin due to the reduced levels of moisture in the air. Howling winds. Sub-freezing temperatures and the lack of sunshine can cause dryness and flakiness which may be extremely uncomfortable and not very appealing to look at. It is imperative to nourish your skin by constantly moisturizing it throughout. Cold creams, body lotions and butters can of course help in moisturizing your skin and keeping it nourished but is it enough? Harmful chemicals in creams can provide temporary nourishment but turning to natural ingredients maybe a better way to keep the skin healthy for a longer period. These five natural ingredients can be found easily in your kitchens. Go check.

1. Oatmeal

The otherwise healthy (and often boring) breakfast meal is packed with saponins which are natural cleansers and absorbs oil easily. Add equal parts oatmeal and yogurt to a bowl and mix to form a paste which can be used easily as a body moisturizer.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel is known to treat many skin problems including acne, eczema, rashes. Those with oily skin usually always run away from moisturization because of the greasiness. Aloe vera gel is literally perfect all throughout the year especially if you have an oily skin type which hydrates the skin minus it feeling greasy. The best way to use aloe vera gel is by simply scooping out the gel from the plant or splitting it in half and rubbing it on the skin and rinsing it off after 15-20 minutes.

3. Honey

Honey is a commonly found ingredient in the kitchen, but did you know that it is in fact great to nourish your skin? Honey has anti-inflammatory properties that are known to treat many skin problems. Honey can be used as it is by gently massaging it on your skin 2-3 times a day and rinsing it off with lukewarm water. For a more wholesome skincare routine, add 2 tablespoons of honey to 3 tablespoons of yogurt; mix well and massage it to your skin and simply rinse off after 10 minutes.

4. Bananas

We are bananas for banana! Bananas are naturally enriched with fatty acids that have so much goodness for the skin. Not only do they moisturize the skin well, but they also tighten the skin to give it a more youthful look. Mash 1-2 bananas (depending on the size) into a bowl and add a few tablespoons of honey or an egg white to the mixture and then apply it on your skin. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and wash it off with regular water for a naturally glowing look that is soft and hydrated.

5. Olive Oil

Olive oil is enriched with the goodness of Vitamin E and A; both of which are known to keep the skin healthy. Olive oil contains antioxidants that fights back ageing and helps in keeping the skin moisturized. Simply massage a few drops of olive oil on your skin and massage it thoroughly to let the skin absorb all the oil leaving your skin soft and supple.

Who does not want to keep their young skin for as long as possible? Here are 6 simple ways that might help to keep you looking young.

A healthy diet and lifestyle can boost your skin naturally and significantly help you fight the signs of aging. Anti-aging is the most sought-after skin-care regime the past couple of years. You have a society that is getting older, the average American diet falls far below standards and throw in the stresses of 2020 and you have the perfect makings for a face and skin that is aging more quickly than it should.

Well, little do people know that small changes in your diet, lifestyle, and the products you use on your body can go a long way in helping you to age gracefully. While there are numerous new and cutting-edge techniques that might be able to reverse or slow the signs of aging, a daily regimen is THE BEST way to start.

We asked several of our beauty friends and here is what they came up with:

STRESS LESS

Stress is directly related to an accelerated breakdown of collagen resulting in “worry lines”, frown lines and crow’s feet. Aging slowly is definitely related to being happier. Most of the bright colored ones contain antioxidants and fight free radicals in the body that cause damage to your cells and make you age faster. Try adding some walnuts daily. Mix them into your afternoon yogurt. They dramatically improve collagen production.

EXERCISE

You have to get the blood flow going for at least 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes. Oxygenated blood releases endorphins that will bring a special glow to your skin. There are volumes written about exercising but try walking a couple days a week and throwing in a simple workout routine with bands. GET MOVING!

HYDRATE

Not drinking enough water causes a dull, dry, and wrinkled appearance due to cells that are overly dehydrated. You want a soft dewy texture to your face and skin with a glowing complexion. You can google how much water you should drink each day but aim for at least 64-100oz per day and that is WATER, not other liquids like coffee, tea, or a Monster type beverage.

SUNSCREEN

Protection against sun damage must start early. Radiation causes damage to your cells and cause photo-aging. There are so many options for sunscreen including non-greasy ones. Apply on your face whenever you will be out in the sun for more than 10 minutes. Winter, spring, summer, and fall…radiation does not know seasonality. Protecting the skin from those harmful UV rays is of UTMOST importance.

SMOKING

Smoking increases the rate of collagen breakdown thereby hastening the wrinkles and aging effects. Nicotine and smoke, including vaping, starve the cells of oxygen causing long term damage. If you do not smoke, do not start. If you do smoke, quitting is brutally hard but there are so many support programs out there.

Having beautiful skin can cost a lot of money but it doesn't have to. Take a look inside your kitchen and you may find some amazing ingredients to keep your skin healthy and fresh.

Get up. Open your fridge. Open your cupboard door. Look inside. Bet you will find at least 2 of these everyday foods that will help keep your skin looking fresh, young and healthy. Now close the door, grab a glass of water and read below…

B LUEBERRIES

Not only are blueberries great for your overall health but being high in antioxidants and resveratrol they can help reduce sun damage. Try for a ¼ to a ½ of a cup a day, frozen or fresh. We prefer frozen as the useable fiber content is higher.

SALMON

Salmon and other fatty fish are rich with omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation and signs of aging in the body. If you are not a fan of eating salmon and fish, consider taking a trusted fish oil supplement. Nordic Naturals is one of our favorites.

LEAFY GREENS

Almost all leafy greens contain huge amounts of both vitamin A and vitamin C. Vitamin A helps maintain a healthy skin tone while vitamin C helps build skin cells, boost collagen production and reduce free radical damage.

Spinach is a favorite as it is very versatile as it can be added to a smoothie with some blueberries, see above, added to eggs or part of a nutritious salad. Try cooking spinach in a wok with garlic and balsamic vinegar!

AVOCADOS

5 tips that will help to keep your stay at home skin healthy and glowing.

After a full week of social distancing and spending most of the day inside you might be wondering why your skin isn’t glowing like it usually does. You might be wondering, I’m staying home, I’m not coming into contact with pollutants and sunshine — I’m not even wearing makeup! So why is my skin freaking out?!

Here are 5 tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Moisturize

Experts agree that the biggest way you can be helping your skin right now is by moisturizing. To replenish your skin, you can keep using your go-to lotion, or use some at-home staples like olive or coconut oil, or honey, as it contains hydrating humectants and naturally occurring antimicrobial properties. For dry hands and feet try applying a bit of olive oil and cover with gloves and socks for 15-20 minutes daily.

Wash Your Face

Even though you may not be exposed to the outdoor elements as much as usual, or are wearing makeup less frequently (if at all), experts agree it’s still important to wash your face daily. To ensure you are not letting bacteria, debris and dead skin build up, use a complete soap that cleans and moisturizes. Look for ingredients like activated charcoal, tea tree oil and coconut oil. Utilize Your Pantry

Sure, your pantry has been keeping your belly full, but it can also be a huge resource for nourishing your skin.

For an anti-aging DIY face mask, combine yogurt and honey to gently slough off old skin and leave your skin glowing, soft, and hydrated. To create, mix two tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt with one tablespoon of raw honey in a small bowl. Apply to the face and let the mask dry for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

To wake up your skin in the morning, try a simple body scrub of sugar, coffee grounds, and oil. Combine one cup of already-brewed coffee grounds, ¼ to ½ cup of brown sugar, and a dash of olive or coconut oil. Right before turning off the water in the shower, gently apply this mixture all over your body except your face — a product this coarse is too abrasive for the skin on your face — and rinse.

Change The Way You’re Showering

As much as we love long, hot showers and sudsy soaps, they actually take away from our skin’s natural thin layer of oil. Brace yourself for shorter, more tepid showers, reach for a gentle lotion-based cleanser, and use deep-hydrating body lotion or oil immediately after. Plus, you should look for key ingredients like coconut oil, avocado oil and goats milk when buying shower products.

Be Mindful of General Wellness

4 Common Skincare Mistakes That Can Destroy Your Face

Too tired to wash? Scrubbing too much? What, sunscreen and picking your skin? All not good and here is why.

Most of us want good skin and some of us will do some outlandish things to get that radiant glow. Lasers, light boxes, injections, plastic surgery, 100 step skin care regimens that can cost hundreds of dollars are just a few of the trendy things we have seen that really might not be that great for your skin unless the plastic robotic look is what you are going for.

Getting better, healthier skin is not as complicated as you might think. A great place to start is to look into the proverbial mirror and see what habits you might be doing that are wreaking havoc.

Below are the four top mistakes dermatologists see people make all the time.

1. Not washing your face before bed

I’m beat! We all have been there and it is so easy to skip washing your face when both Netflix and the pillow are calling you. NOT GOOD! And if you wear make-up, even worse. According to dermatologists it is one of the worst things you can do for your complexion. Also, just as bad is using makeup remover wipes in place of a face wash. Great in a pinch but definitely should not be part of your before bed cleansing method.

2. Over exfoliating with harsh scrubs

Scrub scrub and more scrub. It’s so easy to get used to that scrubbing feeling and when your skin isn’t acting right, often times we scrub even more. The reality is you may doing more harm than good. Why? Exfoliating with a scrub can cause tiny tears in the skin and thus impair the skin’s normal protective barrier.

Exfoliation is still important. Trying using gentler scrubs and no more than two to three times per week. If you are under 25 years of age, consult a dermatologist before using a scrub on a regular basis.

3. Skipping daily sunscreen

I know it’s 35 degrees outside and the last thing you are thinking about is sunscreen. WRONG. You need sunscreen every day -- yes, even when it's cloudy, raining or snowing. Sun exposure causes sunspots, skin damage and can lead to skin cancer -- and you don't have to be at the beach to get too much exposure. Apply daily and do not forget the ears.

4. Picking your skin

You may not even realize that you do it, but constantly picking at the skin can cause irritation, inflamed skin and spread bacteria. Going overboard with this can lead to scarring, and may even make you break out since your hands usually have a good amount of bacteria on them. If this is a nervous habit, try and break it by keeping your hands busy with something else.

Winter Skin - a few tips to help prevent and get rid of that dry, rough and scaly skin.

Winter. It is the time of year that all skin tones and types experience dullness, dryness and “scaliness” from harsh weather conditions including wind, snow and extreme temperatures. Hands, elbows and knees take a beating with our faces getting most of the unwanted attention from the elements. Here are some tips to keep your skin clean, nourished and moisturized.

Regimen: If you are not already using a hydrating cleansing bar, it might be time to switch. A richer, more nourishing bar will help keep the bodies natural oils on the skin and not in the drain. Moisture: When using a soap, look for ones that gently clean the skin and face. Drink plenty of water. Use a humidifier and avoid extremely hot baths and showers.

Exfoliate: To help skin keep its summer glow all winter long, you will have to adjust with a little more care and some common sense. With exfoliation, it is important to only exfoliate as much as your individual skin needs. It is suggested no more than three times per week especially in the harsher months. When you aggressively exfoliate you strip the protective layers of the skin that you need to keep moisture in.

Now that cold weather is approaching, yearly dry skin issues have become more visible once again. Throw in a little pollution and you have the perfect scenario for that uncomfortable stretch of the skin when you look in the mirror after washing your face and smile or when you step outside of the shower. Well we might have some age-old and time tested relief and remedies that are inexpensive, simple and natural. You are going to love how your skin feels.

1. Coconut Oil

Face Washing - 60 Seconds and Why

The average person washes their face for 15 seconds, see why 60 seconds might be the key to beautiful, healthy facial skin.

Back in January, the time when everyone makes resolutions to be healthier, drink more water and have great skin, a very simple skin care concept went viral. A famous aesthetician suggested that people wash their faces morning and night for a full 60 seconds. Heck, a very simple practice that is easy to remember and only takes, well, a minute.

How long to wash your face has been one of the most talked about opinions in skin care but the 60-second rule makes sense. Let’s take a look.

The average person washes their face for 15 seconds. Increasing it to 60 seconds allows the ingredients of the soap to actually work. 60 seconds softens the skin and dissolves blockages. Texture and overall evenness improves dramatically. The massaging effect of the fingers on the face provides cellular stimulation possibly promoting new cell growth.

SUMMER - Think Skin

Summer is finally here. Take simple and easy pre-cautions to keep your skin healthy and safe.

Summer is here and the sun is at its most powerful position. That means it is time to really pay attention to your skincare. Damaging exposure to the sun can happen in any season but typically we expose ourselves more during these months. A little fact you might not know. The sun is closer to the earth in January than it is in July, closer by about 3,000,000 miles.

A couple “rules” to keep in mind this summer.

The most basic rule, use sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen that offers broad spectrum, UVA and UVB, protection and has an SPF of 30 or higher. Try to find one that is water-resistant as sweating and swimming can lower the amount of protection through dilution. Do not forget to re-apply often and do not forget your ears.

The second “rule” is stay hydrated. Not only does your skin need water but so does your body. Drinking enough water helps to keep your body detoxified. There are many articles on hydrating and a few theories on how much water you should consume. Remember, drinking things like iced coffee or iced tea can have a de-hydrating effect on your body so don’t rely solely on those types of beverages.

Skin releases toxins when exposed to the stress of sunlight on top of whatever else is in the environment. Twice a day cleaning, morning and night, will help keep your skin clean and pH levels in check.

Food is the forth factor in keeping your skin healthy throughout the summer. Eat healthy foods such as fruits, vegetable and whole grains and stay away from processed foods and sugars. Watermelon, tomatoes and cucumbers are all great ways to take in extra water without drinking it. The body is all about balance and when you throw the body out of balance you can cause changes in skin texture, color, and moisture level resulting in acne, eczema and other potentially dangerous skin issues.

Certified Organic - What Does It Mean?

We have all seen the logo on the foods that we buy, "Certified Organic" but do you know what that means?

We have all seen the tag, “Certified Organic” but what does it mean? What are the requirements and standards needed to earn that respected logo on a food product?

I am going to try to clear up what certified organic means and the process that growers and producers must go through to become and remain organic. While I am not an expert, I do try to purchase organic items as much as possible, looking for the “Certified” logo on the package and/or label.

First, what is “Certified Organic”? Let’s start with this as a definition:

Certified organic farmers and processors are committed to a food system that works with natural systems to improve soil, protect your health and produce great tasting food.

Here are eight things you should know about being “Certified Organic”:

1. Farmers use land management practices that protect natural resources, conserve biodiversity and improve the health of their soil.

2. Farmers maximize animal welfare by raising livestock in an environment where stress is minimized and where they are able to exhibit their natural behaviors such as grazing, rooting and scratching. Animals are given access to the outdoors year-round.

3. Prohibited pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers cannot be used in crop production. Producers must maintain buffers that prohibit contamination drift from prohibited substances and neighboring GMO crops.

4. Organic production prohibits GMO’s including seeds, livestock feeds and ingredients used in processed products.

5. Livestock are fed 100% organic feed. They do not receive conventional, genetically modified corn and soybeans, hormones or antibiotics. They also must obtain a significant portion of their diet from certified organic pasture grasses during the grazing season.

6. Processed foods such as cheese, bread or jam are produced with certified organic ingredients. Artificial colors and flavors, preservatives such as nitrates and other synthetic additives are prohibited.

7. Certified organic products are randomly subject to pesticide residue tests. The allowable limit of pesticide residue on organic food is just 5% of what the EPA allows on conventional produce.

8. Organic certification is the only label backed by clear legal definitions and independent third-party verification. All certified operations participate in an annual inspection of their premises, purchases and practices to ensure the integrity of the organic seal.

Certified Organic is the only food label with a clear legal definition, a process for public input and mandatory third-party inspections. There are so many claims on food packages today, it can be dizzying and extremely confusing. For me, I do grow my own produce during the summer and for the small amount I produce, I am 100% sure that it is organic. Aside from that, you are relying on farmers and producers and the government to certify that what you are buying and paying for is organic. If you ever have a question regarding authenticity of a product, go to the companies website and contact someone. A legitimate brand will always be willing to share resources.

The vegan lifestyle and plant-based diets are both approaches to better health that are growing faster than any other food trend in history.

Alternative eating lifestyles such as plant-based were at one time considered a fad but in the last five years have seen an incredible rise worldwide. According to a poll by the Vegetarian Resource Group 6 – 8 million Americans have eliminated meat, including seafood, from their plates. Plant based eating is creating an unprecedented demand on new and existing food manufacturers and brands, on institutions such as schools and hospitals and will create amazing opportunities for small regional food providers.

MILLENNIALS & THE INTERNET

GlobalData reports “Seventy percent of the world’s population is either reducing meat consumption or leaving meat off of the table altogether,” with millennials at the forefront. The environment has been the primary concern with health concerns second. The main interest is to make the earth a better place to live. “The majority of my vegan clients are in their 20’s and 30’s and their concern for animal treatment relates to sustainability. Sustainability helps to reduce methane emissions from industrial farms.” says to Lisa Strollman a plant-based nutritionist.

The internet and the millennials use of it has been a key driver in the rise of plant-based diets and the vegan lifestyle. Knowing where your food comes from and increased awareness of the negative effects of meat and positive effects of plants through the web makes choices easy and faster. Take a look at how many food apps there are, what you are eating is trendy. The nutritional values and the sources can be obtained in seconds.

BENEFITS FOR ALL

Perceptions are changing. Recently the American Medical Association suggested that hospitals consider providing plant-based meals for patients. A holistic cardiologist in Michigan began teaching plant-based diets to heart patients in 1990 and subsequently has seen hundreds of them avoid invasive and surgical procedures. Noted was also a drop in Type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits lowers blood pressure, according to The American Diabetes Association. The ADA states that a nutrient-dense vegetarian diet can decrease the risk of certain diseases including cancer.

Take a walk down the aisles of your local supermarket. You will notice the shelves being stocked with more and more meatless products like plant-based burgers. One very popular brand is the “BEYOND MEAT” burger where in some parts of the country sell twice as many units as their carnivorous counterpart.

Google “ famers markets near me ” and you will see several in a 25-mile radius where five years ago there might have been one. Consumers want fresh, locally grown products and the plant-based non-meat options are leading the way.

THE FUTURE

Aside from the health benefits of eating less meat, the impact has a global reach. Companies are going to have to adjust their portfolios to a consumer that is eating less processed foods. Farmers are going to have to adapt, restaurants diversify and institutions like hotels, universities and hospitals will have to change their offerings. Even Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is asking its suppliers to offer more plant-based options. Look for many new companies to start-up. Look for regionalization as local growers and producers continue to populate farmers markets and local markets to sell their goods. It's exciting as a food "trend" has never been so global and potentially so impactful.

Vegan vs Plant Based

What are the differences and which is best for you.

It seems that different forms of eating have become all the rage lately. There is vegan, paleo, gluten-free, plant based, non-processed and keto just to name a few. Some are medically based and revolve around a verified physical condition such as a wheat allergy. Others are lifestyle decisions that are principle based. Lastly some are trending fads usually driven by an Instagram celebrity.

Two of the more popular and generally confusing are the whole food plant-based diet and the vegan lifestyle. Many think they are the same, a vegan diet is not the same thing as a whole food plant-based diet. I’m going to break it down for you.

VEGAN

People who eat a vegan diet do not eat animal-based products. This includes meat, dairy, eggs, or animal-derived ingredients, like honey. This lifestyle extends beyond excluding food and ingredients made from animal products. It carries over to everyday life.

Shoes, clothes, accessories, makeup, shampoo—anything made with materials that come from animals, like leather and beeswax are off limits.

WHOLE-FOOD PLANT BASED

Like the vegan diet, people who eat a whole food plant-based diet avoid animal-based products, including meat, dairy, and eggs. Unlike the vegan diet, processed foods, including oil, white flour, and refined sugar is not part of the diet. This way of eating is based around unprocessed or minimally processed veggies, fruit, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Here is an easy way to remember the distinction between the vegan diet and the whole food plant-based diet: people who are vegan can eat Oreo cookies, Oreo’s are not made from animal products. People who are whole food plant-based cannot eat Oreo's.

People’s motivation for adopting a vegan diet and lifestyle is prompted by animal rights issues and the ethical treatment of animals. People who follow a whole food plant-based diet generally do it for their health reasons.

One way of eating isn’t better than the other; it all depends on your motivation. If your main motivation is losing weight, boosting your immune system, and getting seriously healthy, the whole food plant-based diet is the way to go. If your main motivation is the ethical treatment of animals, the vegan diet is perfect. And if you want both, the whole food plant-based diet is the one.

Do not let your choice of “diets” be swayed by any social media platforms or personalities. Decide what is best for you based on your physical needs along with your lifestyle convictions. When you make any major change in your diet, expect reactions from your body and always consult the proper medical person to determine any potential side-effects.
