5 Simple Eating Habits That Can Support Healthier Skin

Michael Carrubba • April 13, 2026

Healthy skin isn’t just about what you put on your body—it’s also about what you put in it.

"You are what you eat", how many times have we heard that! Well, that age-old statement may be true. Your skin reflects your daily habits—and that includes what you eat. While no single food is a miracle solution, consistent, simple choices can support healthier, more balanced skin over time. Here are five eating habits that can make a difference.

1. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
Water supports overall skin function and helps maintain a more balanced, comfortable feel. Dehydrated skin can appear dull and feel tight—something many people mistakenly blame on their cleanser. Keep in mind that many of us consume beverages that actually may dehydrate us such as coffee, energy drinks and some forms of tea. A good simple rule of thumb is to consume equal ounces of water for coffee, have an 8oz coffee, consume an additional 8 ounces of water.

2. Focus on Healthy Fats
Foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil contain fats that support the skin’s natural barrier. A strong barrier helps your skin retain moisture and stay resilient. Try adding a small amount of nuts to a Greek yogurt or a salad. Pumpkin seeds with a touch of sea salt are amazing.

3. Add More Fruits and Vegetables
Colorful fruits and vegetables provide vitamins and antioxidants that help support skin health. Think berries, leafy greens, carrots, and citrus—simple additions that go a long way. As we move from winter in many parts of the country, hit a local farm or market and start eating veggies and fruits that are in season.

4. Be Mindful of Sugar Intake
High sugar consumption may contribute to inflammation, which can show up in your skin. You don’t need to eliminate it—just be aware of balance. This is a biggie for any skin care enthusiast. Sugar will completely derail any $100.00 of moisturizer. Avoid it.

5. Support Your Skin with Gentle Daily Care
What you eat matters—but so does how you treat your skin every day. Using a gentle, non-stripping cleanser helps maintain your skin barrier and complements the healthy habits you build from within. So many commercial soaps, while some are good, clean way too harsh and actually maybe damaging your skin. Choose wisely and read the labels.
