Face Washing - 60 Seconds and Why

Michael Carrubba • July 24, 2019

The average person washes their face for 15 seconds, see why 60 seconds might be the key to beautiful, healthy facial skin.

Back in January, the time when everyone makes resolutions to be healthier, drink more water and have great skin, a very simple skin care concept went viral. A famous aesthetician suggested that people wash their faces morning and night for a full 60 seconds. Heck, a very simple practice that is easy to remember and only takes, well, a minute.

How long to wash your face has been one of the most talked about opinions in skin care but the 60-second rule makes sense. Let’s take a look.

The average person washes their face for 15 seconds. Increasing it to 60 seconds allows the ingredients of the soap to actually work. 60 seconds softens the skin and dissolves blockages. Texture and overall evenness improves dramatically. The massaging effect of the fingers on the face provides cellular stimulation possibly promoting new cell growth.

How does it work? It’s pretty simple. Wet your face. Lather up the bar of soap in your hands and wash gently while singing the A-B-C song. Purvisha Patel, a board certified dermatologist says “In our busy lives, where face washing may be done in a hurry, or even as an afterthought in the shower, the beauty hack for washing for 60 seconds is a good guideline.” She adds “It makes sure the cleanser is applied and actually rubbed into the skin for a whole minute before getting washed off.”

Cleansing for 60 seconds using an oil based soap like Allie’s, helps to soften the skin, clean out the pores and washes off all of the pollution, makeup and sweat from the day. If you add an after wash serum, moisturizer or spot hydrators, you will get a better result by using them on thoroughly cleansed skin.

Lastly doing a proper cleanse helps to keep the skins natural barrier in tact even while removing excess dirt and oil. Your skins barrier is always working to protect your face from all the chemicals it becomes exposed to during the day. 60 seconds will help to remove dead skin without disrupting the bodies naturally produced protection.

How you care for your skin is as individualistic as your finger prints. You have to develop a pattern that works for you based on your specific skin type, relative issues such as dryness or acne and common sense. Pay attention to how your skin is reacting. If your skin feels extremely dry after 60 seconds of washing, 45 seconds might work best for you. If you have acne or rosacea, 20 to 30 seconds might be ideal.

Now, lather up and start singing the A-B-C song proudly and loudly while looking in the mirror!
