Having beautiful skin can cost a lot of money but it doesn't have to. Take a look inside your kitchen and you may find some amazing ingredients to keep your skin healthy and fresh.
Get up. Open your fridge. Open your cupboard door. Look inside. Bet you will find at least 2 of these everyday foods that will help keep your skin looking fresh, young and healthy. Now close the door, grab a glass of water and read below…
B LUEBERRIES
Not only are blueberries great for your overall health but being high in antioxidants and resveratrol they can help reduce sun damage. Try for a ¼ to a ½ of a cup a day, frozen or fresh. We prefer frozen as the useable fiber content is higher.
SALMON
Salmon and other fatty fish are rich with omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation and signs of aging in the body. If you are not a fan of eating salmon and fish, consider taking a trusted fish oil supplement. Nordic Naturals is one of our favorites.
LEAFY GREENS
Almost all leafy greens contain huge amounts of both vitamin A and vitamin C. Vitamin A helps maintain a healthy skin tone while vitamin C helps build skin cells, boost collagen production and reduce free radical damage.
Spinach is a favorite as it is very versatile as it can be added to a smoothie with some blueberries, see above, added to eggs or part of a nutritious salad. Try cooking spinach in a wok with garlic and balsamic vinegar!
AVOCADOS
Considered to be a “super-food”, avocados are essential to a healthy complexion. They are high in Omega-9 Fatty Acids, contain antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids. Antioxidants should be a major part of any healthy skincare regimen. They help to reduce the damage of free radicals, reduce dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
We love eating avocados raw or on a couple pieces of toasted Ezekiel bread. We mix it with crushed red pepper and cilantro.
OLIVE OIL
Olive oil contains three powerful antioxidants that are vital for protecting skin from free radical damage: vitamin E, polyphenols and phytosterols. Studies show that topical use of ingredients rich in polyphenols help improve our skin's natural defense against oxidative stress, prevent skin aging and may inhibit skin cancer. Phytosterols can improve dry skin conditions by reducing transepidermal water loss.
Olive oil also contains a rare compound called hydroxytyrosol, which adds to olive oil’s free radical fighting power.
GREEN TEA
Green tea is great for healthy skin, so much so that many skincare serums and creams actually contain green tea extract ! Green tea, like many other teas, contains polyphenols, which have been shown to have antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. Catechins, the most common polyphenols in green tea, are also known to be strong anti-inflammatory agents.
Try drinking a cup with each of your meals and if you choose to use the bagged variety, keep the bag in the water.
Nothing complicated. Nothing expensive…just common items that if you consume on a regular basis will dramatically improve your skin.
