Winter Skin - a few tips to help prevent and get rid of that dry, rough and scaly skin.

Winter. It is the time of year that all skin tones and types experience dullness, dryness and “scaliness” from harsh weather conditions including wind, snow and extreme temperatures. Hands, elbows and knees take a beating with our faces getting most of the unwanted attention from the elements. Here are some tips to keep your skin clean, nourished and moisturized.

Regimen: If you are not already using a hydrating cleansing bar, it might be time to switch. A richer, more nourishing bar will help keep the bodies natural oils on the skin and not in the drain. The Allie’s Naturals soap bars include a multi-oil blend which includes olive oil, soybean oil and coconut oil, all of which have been shown to prevent sun damage, hydrate the skin and be an effective, time tested moisturizer. For more information including ingredients, go to www.alliesnaturals.com. Avoid products with alcohol.

Moisture: When using a soap, look for ones that gently clean the skin and face. Ingredients such as activated charcoal are great as they lift dirt from the skin and help with the cleansing process in a very mild, non-stripping way. Also, moisture starts from the inside. Drink plenty of water. Use a humidifier and avoid extremely hot baths and showers.

Exfoliate: To help skin keep its summer glow all winter long, you will have to adjust with a little more care and some common sense. With exfoliation, it is important to only exfoliate as much as your individual skin needs. It is suggested no more than three times per week especially in the harsher months. When you aggressively exfoliate you strip the protective layers of the skin that you need to keep moisture in.

Protection: Do you need sunblock in the winter…YES! Does the sun stop shinning in February? While you may not be exposed the same way you would be lying on a beach in mid-July, the sun’s harmful effects are still there. For these months, look for a sunscreen that is more hydrating and has an SPF of at least 30. Always apply to the less obvious areas like your ears and always use protection on your lips.

Hands Down: Next to our faces, our hands get a lot of exposure to harsh elements. Keep a good quality hand cream at reach in places like your car, office and night stand for convenient application. For extreme dryness try applying coconut oil or almond oil and after applying, put mittens on. Really, try it.

Whatever the season, your skin and the care of it is important. Your skin is your bodies largest living organism and makes up about 16 percent of your bodies total weight. It is the first thing that people see. Winter, and all of it’s elements, can take its toll. With a few simple changes you can ward off the harshness and move right into spring and summer looking and feeling amazing.
